Highlights of IFA 2014


During the first week of September, the IFA 2014 was held in Berlin and saw a number of top technology companies unveil their latest and upcoming devices. This year, there was a large focus on smartphones and smartwatches. This article takes a look at the 5 upcoming pieces of tech that SimplyTech are most excited about.

Samsung Gear VR

As opposed to introducing a totally new system of gaming, Samsung’s virtual reality headset is a shell that works alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The headset works by docking the Note 4 in the front of the headset and uses the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope in order to give the appearance of reality. We are not sure when the device will hit the shelves. However, we can expect it to be released later this year alongside the Note 4.

LG G Watch R

LG caught onto the smartwatch trend early with the G Watch and have seriously upped their game with their latest smartwatch: LG G Watch R. the device has a round face and is incredibly durable. The smartwatch runs on the Android Wear OS from Google and will be available in a range of styles and can be customized with different straps.

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Now available for pre-order, one of the best tablets unveiled was the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony has been frequently praised for their classy and durable designs and the Z3 Compact is no exception! Like its predecessor, the device is waterproof and dust resistant. However, it sports a more compact design as it clocks in at just 6.4mm slim and weighs 270g!

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is one of the most innovative smartphones that we have seen this year. The phone sports a unique curved screen which features a sloped edge on one side which can be used for displaying apps, menus and music player controls. The Samsung Galaxy Edge is also a great device for those who love taking photos as it features an impressive 16MP camera on the reverse with Optical Image Stabilization and a 3.7MP front-facing camera.

Asus ZenWatch

One of the most exciting products unveiled at the IFA was the Asus ZenWatch. The watch is powered by Android Wear which means that it can be connected to any Android phone running on at least Android 4.3. The device has a subtly curved screen and a quality leather strap. The ZenWatch is has a number of great features such as locating your phone, remote camera control and comprehensive health tracking via the Asus Wellness app.
